Course Objectives
To give a global view of earthquake and secondary hazards
To explain impacts of earthquakes, and why earthquake risk reduction is important
To define earthquake risk reduction integrated into the all phases of disaster management system
To explain importance of structural and non-structural earthquake risk reduction
To discuss lessons from past earthquakes
Course Description
Eartquake hazards, Plate Tectonics, plate movements, faulting and stress release, magnitüde, intensity, Fault zanes and earthquake sources, earthquake hazard maps, earthquake research studies, earthquakes and secondary hazards, hazard and risk analysis, vulnerabilities and risk, Impacts of eartquakes. Earthquake Risk Management. Non-structural seismic risk reduction programs: legislations on land use planning, public and local governments, community based seismic risk reduction programs, earthquake safety training, awarness and prepareness (CERT), town-watching, role of NGO’s, risk communication, risk transfer. Lessons from past eartquakes in reponse, shaltering, debris management. Structural Mitigation Measures and Programs: Building Types and Relative Vulnerability, Rehabilitation and Retrofit, Building Codes (History and Development), developing building codes and other legal issues, public buildings, critical facility and infrastructure restoration.
Course Outcomes

understand impacts of society, economies and infrastructure
importance of the earthquake mitigation/risk reduction, and reduces vulnerabilities in order to reduce earthquake impacts
understand the methods, strategies, responsibilities, applications in planning and practicing in all-hazards integrated disaster management
understand the differences in structural and non-structural mitigation
able to develop mitigation techniques in all-hazards integrated disaster management
in order to build earthquake disaster resilience to train and teach public (as well as all stakeholders ) as a disaster manager.
